In this blog post, I will show you my three favorite free link building methods, which I use for local SEO. These methods have the following advantages::
- They are free
- They are very effective
- They are within Googles guidelines
Here are the three free local link building methods:
1. Build the 7 GBP recommended social media profiles
2. Search the keyword in Google for which you want to rank. Use Mangools to reverse engineer top competition sites for local backlinks.
3. Ask ChatGPT to give a list of 50 dofollow backlinks like linktr.ee or about.me
7 GBP recommended social media profiles
This first method is my starting point for all local SEO campaigns. It only takes a couple of hours, and it’s free. You must be logged into your Gmail account, which manages your GBP. Do the following:
- Go to Google and search your company name. You will see your GBP profile with all the details.
- Edit the GBP by clicking Edit profile.
- Scroll down to see the list of social profiles. Click on the pencil icon to edit and enter your URLs.
The seven profiles are:
- Youtube
- Twitter/X
- TikTok
As you can see in the screenshot below, I have created my YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Twitter profiles, and I can add my Instagram and TikTok profiles.
I recommend adding all 7 because you can add a link to your website in all the profiles except for TikTok. You also have the opportunity to make posts that contain text and links to your website’s homepage and blog posts. Links coming from your social media profiles are highly beneficial for Local SEO.
As a special sidenote, I recommend interlinking the social media profiles. This allows Google to cross-crawl them and gives an extra layer of validation.
Use Mangools to reverse engineer top competition websites for local backlinks
This method is more time-consuming. You can definitely spend a couple of days doing this. The basis of the technique is using Mangools to reverse engineer and find your competition’s links, which you can then build similarly. It does require a paid subscription to Mangools, but Mangools is a relatively cheap platform. The basic subscription is currently priced at 29 euros per month.
The method can be broken down like this:
- Search in Google for the keyword you want to rank for.
- Open all the top 10 competition websites or the websites ranking on page one beside you
- Inspect the websites in Mangools. Open the backlinks report.
- Sort by Dofollow and active.
- Open the top 30 backlinks and see if you can get this backlink.
I will use a tree service company based in Alabama as an example.
In this case, I would search for tree service in Alabama. After searching, I would click on the first result to open the website. Then, I would click on the orange Chrome extension for Mangools, click on Backlinks, and See all backlinks.
You then get a report that looks like this below.
If you sort by Dofollow and Active, you get a list of dofollow link opportunities that you can investigate individually.
This method typically gives between 1 to 3 links to the website that you inspect this way. That may not sound as much, but when you consider that these links are almost all locally relevant, and its links your competition has, you can probably see the value. From my experience, you can pretty much rank any local website using only this method.
Just repeat the Google search for different search terms to uncover more competition sites, equaling link opportunities and higher rankings.
Because you are reverse engineering your competition, you will uncover why they are ranking. What links have they built, and how many? This was method number two; let’s jump to method number three.
Use ChatGPT to find free dofollow links similar to linktr.ee or about.me
Method number three is very straightforward. It requires access to ChatGPT, and that’s it.
You log in to ChatGPT and choose your model. I usually use GPT4o, but any model will do for this task. You then ask ChatGPT this simple question:
Please give me a list of 50 alternatives to linktr.ee
ChatGPT will then give you a list of links that look like in the screenshot. Your task is straightforward: go ahead and build the links.
The excellent part of this strategy is that you can repeat it with other types of links. If you perform this search:
Please give me a list of 50 alternatives to about.me
Then, you will be presented with a list of 50 more suitable links. Once you have exhausted this list, simply repeat the question in ChatGPT, and you are on your way to building out your list of highly effective and free-to-follow links.
I have done this, and over the past couple of months, I have built up my very own private list with over 200 links.
The upside of these links is that they’re all free. Even if they are free, and it’s like old-school profile link building Techniques, it works.
The downside is that you need to build quite a lot of links for these to see ranking improvements, but once you get over 50 of these links, that’s when you really start to see movement.
I hope you enjoyed my tutorial 🙂
Alternative link building methods for local seo
When you have built out all the links you want from above, you can start building out alternative types of links.
My favorite alternative link building method is cloud links. I use YACSS for this..
How can you use the GBP profile for free local link building in 2025?
Local businesses can use their Googles Business Profile for link building. Sort of… When the business owner makes a post, he can place an outgoing link in the text. Alternatively he can place an outgoing link on the “Read more” button at the bottom of the GBP post. These posts can be difficult to index, but as they are on a Google property, its a highly recommended strategy, to post regularly on the GBP profile.
What strategies on LinkedIn are effective for free local link building?
The special thing about LinkedIn is, that they allow for you to make articles including outgoing links. These links are, as of 2025, still dofollow. The posts you make in LinkedIn Pulse has dofollow links, and they rank extremely well. For local search terms, this means you can get more than one page one position in Google, as the LinkedIn Pulse articles, often will rank very high.
Does any of the GBP recommended social media profiles have any built in tracking?
The GBP profile has a backend where you can track user engagement. LinkedIns analytics tools offer data on post reach and audience demographics. On Pinterest, the analytics feature helps monitor pin performance and audience interaction to assess strategy effectiveness.
